EmergenSea is a mobile application designed to assist individuals in maritime emergencies by providing a reliable, simple way to contact rescue services.

Available on both iOS and Android, the app focuses on user-friendly features like real-time location tracking, SMS-based distress signals, and automated alerts for potential dangers.

The app’s primary users are boaters who can register their boats and ships and use the app to request help in emergency situations.

It also includes functionalities for administrative staff (rescue teams) to monitor user positions and manage data through a web service interface.

Goal

The main goal of the EmergenSea project is to create a reliable mobile solution that allows boaters to easily request assistance in emergency situations.

The app will simplify the process of reaching out to rescue services, improving safety at sea.

Additionally, it aims to offer geofencing capabilities to monitor potential hazards and send alerts to users and rescue teams.

Challenge

The biggest challenge in developing EmergenSea is ensuring its functionality in areas with limited or no internet connectivity.

The app must rely on SMS for emergency communications and location sharing, which means it has to be designed to operate offline or with minimal connectivity.

Furthermore, integrating real-time location tracking while maintaining privacy and complying with GDPR regulations is another key challenge.

The app must also ensure that rescue teams can track multiple users on a map and respond effectively to emergencies.

Solution​

To address these challenges, EmergenSea integrates both mobile and web solutions:

  • The mobile app collects user and boats and ships data, allowing users to send emergency requests via SMS, even without an internet connection.
  • The web service includes an interactive map where administrators can track users, set up geofencing around hazard areas, and manage user data.
  • The app uses location services and push notifications to ensure users and administrators stay informed in case of emergencies or approaching danger zones.
  • A major feature is the use of SMS to ensure messages are reliably delivered to emergency teams, even in areas with poor mobile network coverage.

Result​

The app successfully addresses the need for reliable emergency communication at sea by integrating simple yet effective SMS-based systems.

It ensures that both users and rescue teams can act quickly in case of an emergency, even when no internet connection is available.

With future phases planned to include weather API integration, subscription models, and promotional features, EmergenSea is poised to grow into a comprehensive maritime safety tool, expanding its functionality for users and rescue teams alike.
